Far Architecture is a collaborative design studio based in New York City’s NoMad / Design District. From a small storefront studio in the heart of the city, Far works across architecture, interiors, and creative placemaking, bringing together modern design with Nordic restraint, South American warmth, Asian spatial sensibility, and the layered texture of New York itself.
The name Far reflects both distance and curiosity. Our work begins in New York, but draws from places, materials, and traditions far beyond it. We are interested in clean, open, modern spaces that still feel grounded, spaces with texture, atmosphere, natural materiality, and a sense of everyday life.
The studio was founded by Matus Ferguson, an architect originally from North Carolina. Before architecture became his full-time path, Matus studied industrial arts, lived and worked through the Great Recession, and spent time exploring organic farming, permaculture, off-grid living, and travel. Those experiences shaped a design sensibility rooted in simplicity, craft, landscape, resourcefulness, and natural systems.
Matus later studied architecture at NC State University, where he was influenced by a wide range of teachers, designers, and regional traditions from the early modernists of North Carolina to the sleek conceptualists and placemakers of Spain. He studied under Spanish architect Juan Coll-Barreu, whose work deeply influenced Matus’s interest in conceptual design and the ability of architecture to carry larger ideas through form, space, and atmosphere.
After professional stints at KPF, Palette Architecture, and Joseph Vance Architects, Matus’s work now moves between layered conceptual thinking and the practical intelligence of everyday design: clean, sensible, and sometimes unexpected spaces that feel open, useful, and alive.
